Luther Perkins, born in
Como, Mississippi, January 8, 1928,
created
the familiar Johnny Cash “boom-chicka-boom” guitar style forever linked to
the Man in Black, and his music. In my opinion, one cannot think of Johnny Cash
without considering the simple, yet affective guitar work Luther developed
(1955-1968), and (from 1969) Bob Wootton continued. Indeed, Bob continued to
refine, and adapt the unique “Luther style” while at the same time retain
the integrity of one of the most recognized sounds of the twentieth century.
In
conversations with Luther’s widow, Margie, I discover Luther had a
never-ending desire to improve his guitar talents, including adding more
intricate dimensions within his own creation.
Review
the Johnny Cash recordings made over the years, and enjoy listening to Luther
gain agility, and innovation from 1955, until his death in Nashville, August 5, 1968.
As side note, if I may: It's
with great pride and thanks I learned the first Musicians Hall of Fame induction
ceremony included Luther within their hallowed halls, November 2007. I initiated
the idea of putting Luther in the hall, and gave officials contact
information after I spoke with Luther's widow, Margie.
